In recent years, driven by both supply-side structural reform and high-quality development, China's steel industry has undergone profound changes in its export product structure. The latest data released by the General Administration of Customs shows that in the first quarter of 2024, China's steel exports continued to maintain steady growth, with a significant increase in the export share of high-value-added products such as galvanized steel sheets, color-coated steel sheets, and cold-rolled stainless steel. These products have gradually replaced traditional carbon steel for construction, becoming the main export force.
Industry analysis points out that this structural change is mainly driven by two factors: first, upgrading demand in overseas markets. With the accelerated industrialization in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, the demand for corrosion-resistant, long-life, and aesthetically pleasing steel has surged in local manufacturing, automotive, and high-end construction industries; second, accelerated technological innovation in domestic steel enterprises. Product upgrades led by leading companies such as Baowu Group and Qingshan Group have enabled Chinese-made galvanized and color-coated steel products to compete with international best practices in terms of weather resistance, processing precision, and surface quality.
It is worth noting that "green, environmentally friendly, and high-strength" have become core labels for exported products. Taking galvanized products as an example, the uniformity of zinc layer thickness and the application of environmentally friendly passivation processes have broadened their application in outdoor construction and home appliances. Meanwhile, color-coated products, through an increasingly diverse color system and the application of fluorocarbon and high-weather-resistant coatings, meet overseas customers' dual demands for architectural aesthetics and lifespan.
Industry experts predict that, with increasing global attention to carbon footprint, China's steel exports will place greater emphasis on full life-cycle management in the future. High-value-added sheet metal products with green and low-carbon attributes will gain a wider market share in the international market.
